Gertrude Beutel, 94, graduated to heaven on August 17, 2019. She lived a full life, devoted to her family, friends and church. After many years as a post-World War II full-time wife and mother, when her two children were in their teens, she returned to the workforce and served for 25 years as a secretary at Houston’s Jane Long Junior High School, where she was much beloved by co-workers. Following her retirement, she volunteered for several community organizations, including Meals on Wheels.
Gertie and her husband, Vernon W. Beutel, were both native Houstonians and married July 14, 1945 at Houston’s First Evangelical Lutheran Church, where they were life-long members. They had 47 years of happily married life until Vernon’s passing in 1992. Also welcoming Gertie to Heaven will be her parents, Herman E. Drews Sr. and Ella Drews Hochmuth; brother Herman E. Drews Jr.; and sister Dorothy Larson.
Gertie is survived by her son, Paul W. Beutel, and spouse Anthony Kuhnert; daughter Doris Borth and spouse Michael Borth; grandson Michael Staton; and granddaughter Beth Beutel and spouse Christian Long; plus numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the remarkable and caring staff at Clarewood House of Houston, where Gertie resided for her final two-and-a-half years on Earth, as well as the angels of Harbor Hospice of Houston, who shepherded her transition to Heaven. Special thanks to Pastor Evan McClanahan of First Evangelical Church of Houston, whose regular visits to Clarewood House brought Gertie comfort and inspiration.
A private burial is planned at Forest Park Lawndale. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials should be sent to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1311 Holman, Houston, Texas 77004.
