Born on January 2, 1929 to Edward and Marion Westervelt, Joan was the youngest of four sisters. She grew up in Westwood, New Jersey, during the Great Depression and World War II. After a chance encounter and whirl wind romance, Joan married James (Jim) Hinson from Leggett, Texas on August 4, 1951. Soon thereafter, they moved to Houston, Texas, where they made their home and raised their family.
Joan was an avid traveler and bridge player, and loved to socialize with friends and family. She was a loyal and trustworthy friend, and was ever mindful of the needs of people and animals. Joan had a generous heart, and quietly gave to numerous individuals, organizations and causes she believed in. She loved the Lord, and was a long-time member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Houston.
Joan is survived by her sons, Ed Hinson and his wife, Najwa, Jeff Hinson and his wife, Judy, grandchildren, Lauren Hufford and her husband Trice, Erin Rapacki and her husband, Dan, Nicholas Hinson and his wife, Wendy, Alex Hinson and Sean Hinson, great-grandchildren, Matthew and Jeffrey Rapacki, Coral and Lily Hinson, Connor Massey and Ellie Hufford, numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Sam. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her sisters, Loris, Betty, and Jane.
Joan will be buried in a private burial on July 26, 2018. A memorial service will take place on July 26, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Geoff Simpson, Associate Rector at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church.
