Louisiana Benoit, 92, walked away with Jesus Monday September 5, 2021. She was born June 19, 1929 to Inez and Alexis Mouton. She was the third daughter of four girls. After graduating from high school in Lafayette, Louisiana, she attended Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana to pursue a teaching degree. Before completing her degree, she moved to Ville Platte, Louisiana to become the only teacher for grades 1st-12th in a one room school for a number of years. Louisiana spent over 30 years of dedicated service working with handicapped children. She was employed at the Center for the Retarded and Richmond State School. There, she developed a love to help children. She also was a Physical Therapist and a Speech Aide until she retired in 1990. She married Albert Benoit Sr. August 20, 1949 and two children were born to this union.
Louisiana and family were members of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church when they purchased their first home in Kashmere Gardens. They became devoted members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she provided transportation and other duties for the Pastor and Nuns. Being one of the first Black families in the area there were challenges in the early 1960’s but Louisiana was a feisty and determined woman that did not let anything stop her! In 1961 when St. Francis of Assisi School was integrated, she enrolled her children and fought hard to make sure their rights were not ignored. She worked diligently with the church and the community to better the communication between the parties. She participated in political rallies and even did local campaigning in the area for local candidates.
She loved camping at Picket Bayou with family and friends on weekends where she could hunt, fish, and play Bid Whist nonstop surrounded by loved ones. Louisiana became known for her masterful cooking skills. There was absolutely NOTHING she could not cook including dishes from all nationalities! Gumbo made by Louisiana and her sister Mary was always debated as to who made it best.
She is predeceased by her husband Albert Benoit Sr., a grandson Brian, and sisters Stella, Mary, and Ann.
She is leaves behind her loving children Rosalind and Albert Jr. (Glenda). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Wilbert Jr. (Aquishia), Christopher (Jocellia), Jason (Roshawn), and Scott. Her 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren will certainly miss their Granna. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and friends!
Louisiana Benoit was a strong, intelligent, and kind woman that everyone old or young loved her tremendously! She was a devout Catholic who loved her relationship with God and her entire family.
