Celebrating the life of Mary Lee Scurlock.
Mary Lee Scurlock was born to the late Eddie and Lizzie Sergeant Scurlock of Charleston, Mississippi. Mary was the youngest of six children, one of whom, Dorothy Scurlock, preceded her in death.
She attended Allen Carver elementary and high school. She was an average student with a witty and outgoing personality. She participated in many after-school activities.
As a child, she was a member of Newtown Missionary Baptist Church of Charleston, Mississippi. Mary participated in Sunday school Bible Training Union and other youth ministries under the leadership of Reverend Jordan.
Upon graduating from high school, Mary moved to California where she stayed with her older sister and brother-in-law until she found employment with Market Basket, a food chain. She was employed as an accounts payable clerk. Mary found a new church home with Mount Tabor under the leadership of Reverend E E Stafford. She faithfully served as a member of the young adult usher board and Sunday school secretary.
Several years later, a son was born to Mary Scurlock and Bill Bolden of whom she named Dorian Bolden. He was the pride and joy of her life. Mary remained employed with Market Basket until the death of her mother in 1993. She returned home to Charleston, Mississippi where she worked as a secretary. Several years later, Mary relocated to Houston, Texas due new to employment opportunities. She remained in accounts payable.
In 2016, Mary was diagnosed with ALS Lou Gehrig’s disease. During this time, her son, Dorian, became her faithful, caring, and committed caregiver until she passed on October 1, 2018. Mary leaves to cherish her memories: a loving son Dorian Bolden, her granddaughter: Avalyn, two brothers: Vernon Scurlock of Chicago, Willie Scurlock (Albertine) of Chicago, three sisters: Lizzie Miles (Vincent) of California, Betty Chambliss of Detroit, Rosie Scurlock of Hempstead, New York, her nieces: Renee, ShaLeeda, ChaJuana, Ruby, Kristle, Sparkle, and her nephews: Vincente, Travelyan, Valerian, Eric, Vernal, and Shawn, along with a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends.
