Maury loved his brother Edmund and Ed’s children Matthew and Elizabeth and Jeanenne’s family as his own. His stepsons Derek Rosales, Derek’s wife Jessica and their sons Troy and Lucas, and his stepson Troy Rosales, Troy’s wife Juli and their daughter Sophia, were essential parts of his life, as were Jeanenne’s sisters and brothers and her many nieces and nephews.
Maury was his own man, born from a mold that produces people who are happy marching to the beat of a different drummer and who fill their lives with interesting, unusual activities.
He loved trains, all sorts of trains – riding them, collecting them, setting up tracks and entertaining family. He was considered an expert in train history in Texas and knew the intricacies of railroad operations. He was a member of the Houston Area ‘G’ Gauge and the Houston Area Live Steamers.
Music was in Maury’s soul. He played the piano for family and friends at every opportunity and was director of the Ukulele Band at All Saints Catholic Church in the Heights. He taught and performed ballroom dancing and met Jeanenne on the dance floor. He loved his faith. He was a member of the Board for the Third Age Learning Center at All Saints and a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.
His many interests also included all things science fiction, and he was a member of the Star Trek Sci-Fi Club. Recognized for doing his own thing, he loved wearing hats of every sort and was rarely seen without one, regardless of the weather or event. He liked collecting – all kinds of things. He enjoyed computers, having worked as a programmer at Fluor Daniel throughout most of his career.
Maury was born in Olympia, Washington, and moved with his parents Emma and Manning Gibson to Houston when he was five years old. He attended Rice University and graduated from the University of Houston.
A truly unique man, he will truly be missed.
