Leta Lou “Snookie” Whitney, resident of Spring, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2019 at the age of 85. Snookie was known for her love of laughter, sense of humor, and took delight in making others smile. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and held dear to her heart the core values of honesty, kindness, integrity, love, selflessness, and loyalty. Friendships played a significant role in Snookie’s life, many lasting for decades. Most of all, she was a devoted child and disciple of Christ and was an active member of Cypress Trails United Methodist Church for over 30 years.
Born in Northeast Arkansas on August 16, 1934 to parents Marcus and Vicki Morrow, Snookie was the youngest of five children: Kenneth Morrow, Marcus “Junior” Morrow, Dorothy “Dot” Allmond, and surviving sibling Halley Corbet. Snookie grew up in Paragould, Arkansas and graduated from Paragould High School’s class of 1952. She was a high school cheerleader and married her eighth-grade sweetheart, Gaylon O. Whitney. Their 65 year marriage began on Christmas Day, 1954 in Paragould, AR. The newlyweds moved to Little Rock for two years before settling in Hot Springs in 1962. There, Snookie was an active member of The Grand Avenue Methodist Church for 11 years, teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, and countless other church functions. She loved serving as a lifetime member and past president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Always active in her children’s lives, Snookie served as past president of Lakeside Middle School PTA, was always team mom for numerous sports teams, cheerleading teams, and other school functions while raising their three children. In 1973, she and her family relocated to North Little Rock where they resided for three years before moving to Wichita, Kansas. In 1978, they made their final move to Spring, TX. There, Snookie loved her time as a volunteer for “Meals on Wheels” and delivered weekly meals for 22 years.
Snookie is survived by her husband, Gaylon O. Whitney and their three children, Wayne O. Whitney (Susan), Vicki A. Shanahan (Bill), and Keith E. Whitney (Gay). She was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, Alexandra Whitney, Kyle Whitney, Walker Whitney, McKenna Whitney, Stephanie Whitney, Sarah Whitney, Daniel Shanahan, Kathleen Reynolds, Joseph Shanahan, Mary Beth Price, and seven great grandchildren, Kensley Shanahan, Jacob Reynolds, Reid Reynolds, Declan Reynolds, Issac Shanahan, Benjamin Shanahan, and Jesse Price.
Visitation for all family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019, from 6-9pm at Calvary Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21723 Aldine Westfield Rd, Humble, TX 77338 (281) 443-3340
Celebration of her life will be held at Cypress Trails United Methodist Church, 22801 Aldine Westfield Rd, Spring, TX 77373 (281) 353-2436 at 11am on Saturday, October 26, 2019 where she has been a member for over 30 years, with brief Fellowship immediately following the service at the church. She will be laid to rest Calvary Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21723 Aldine Westfield Rd, Humble, TX 77338, located 2-3 minutes south of the church immediately afterwards.
