Roger N. Chabra, M.D.

Osterville - Dr. Roger N. Chabra of Osterville passed away peacefully on April 24th at the age of 84.

Roger was born to the late Kaura Ram Chhabra and Janki Devi Chhabra on January 5th, 1937 in Dera Ghazi Khan, India. During the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Roger, his parents and sister, fled Dera Ghazi Khan and settled in Delhi.

After graduating from medical school in India, Roger completed his first residency in England where he lived from 1962-1970. In 1970 Roger, his wife and son relocated to the United States where he completed his second residency in Boston before moving to Cape Cod and establishing a successful private practice in general surgery. Shortly after his retirement from general surgery, Roger opened an opioid treatment clinic which he ran until late 2020.

Roger was a well-respected physician and will be remembered fondly for his compassionate approach toward his patients. He was also a licensed private pilot in his younger years and enjoyed flying the Cape Cod to Nantucket route with his family. Roger also traveled extensively with his wife and was an accomplished artist.

I've only know Roger a few years, yet I learned so much about him as he spoke of his journey at our Rotary meeting. I have the greatest respect for the life he lived. We are honored to have met him and enjoyed time together over the last few years. His time and attention to his patients is greatly appreciated. We will miss Roger greatly.

So many great memories of Roger that it's hard to pick just one. It was as simple as driving with him in his 500 sel or discussing current events with him. He had so many interests. He loved traveling, and I'm thankful we were able to share some adventures in Europe together. He was always excited to see new places. As his only son-in-law I probably drove him crazy at times, but he supported our family and my career no matter what. That was just the kind of person he was. I'm glad I was able to be a part of his life, and I'll definitely miss him.

My grandfather was always a figure in my life that I always looked forward to seeing. He was loving and caring for me since I was only a young child, and I still remember moments when he would hug me tight, especially when we went to visit him. He taught me so much about the world that I didn’t know, like when he lived in India and he told me about the stuff that he had to go through, I recognized so much harm that people go through today. In my eyes he was one of the most influential people I knew, and he taught me all of what I know about how to act around people and how make people love you. I will always remember him as a person in my life that I could rely on to love me.

My grandfather taught me a lot about how I should act. He shaped a lot of my early childhood and visiting him and my grandmother always left me with a feeling of fulfillment, and without him I wouldn’t be able to live the life I do today. He always loved art and encouraged me and my brothers to pursue it, and he always told me how nice it was to have us over when we visited. He was good for the world.

I first met Roger in 1973 when he was Chief Surgical Resident at BUMC, Boston and I had just arrived as an Anaesthesiologist from UK. I quickly realised he was a person of some standing being highly regarded by his colleagues for his competence and skill. He was tall, suave and handsome with a sharp sense of humour and married to Riitta , a tall , blonde beauty: in fact, they were the 'golden couple' and what great parties they gave ! Our families became friends and we have remained so for 48 years meeting periodically in the UK, America or Italy. Friends like that are quite simply, irreplaceable.

My grandfather was one of the kindest people in my life and I will miss him profusely. Roger's brilliance did not go unnoticed in his family life; I often think of our time spent discussing the worlds mayhems together. I remember fondly a day when we were picking up pizza and he told me about his life in India and how he used to drive a motorcycle. Obviously I spent the rest of my time that summer searching for the motorcycle I would buy one day! Grandpa meant the world to me, and I'm so grateful for his beautiful presence in my life.

I have so many memories of my best friend of over 40 years. He was the most kind gentleman who loved his family and cared about each patient he treated. We enjoyed our partnership in Aero Medical Transport and investigating other business ventures together. Our weekly breakfast morning meetings with our group were spent solving world problems in a bipartisan way .
I will miss you my friend . You made a difference in our world .
