Alice E. Vernatter, 89 years young, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1935, to doting parents, James W. and Mary Matthews Ingles. She was a dear sister of the late, Jane Truitt, Mary Laminack, and Edna Mae Stites. Alice was the cherished wife of William “Bill” Vernatter for 64 years, meeting in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Bill and Alice showed an extraordinary example of life long love. She was a proud mother of 3 , Mary Miller (David), Carl Cecil (Karen), and Jane Daniel. She was an adored grandmother of 9, Megan (Tracy), Lauren, Sarah (Richie), Kelly (Mario) Jimmy (Danna), Claire, Annie (Johnny), David (Carlee), and Patrick. She was showered love by 17 great grandchildren, Madison, Hope, Lexy, Ava, Isabella, Milo, Nevaeha, Jaxon, Alice, Sylas, Gabby, Marco, Kylo, Levi, Alessandra, Sadie, and Arabella. Alice was smitten of becoming a great-great grandmother to Canon Wesley David.
She embarked on a journey of academic excellence starting at IPS 84, then attending Short Ridge High School. She later discovered her true passion for music at Mammoth College as a Voice Major.
Professionally, Alice began as a career woman, later partaking in Indiana politics, where she began supporting the Indiana Senate in Indianapolis. She would later would become Greenwood, Indiana’s first city counsel woman in 1972. Years later, she found her calling as an inspiring Weight Watchers instructor, guiding many towards a healthier lifestyle with empathy and dedication.
She cultivated many strong friendships from her many locations that she resided, Indiana, Kentucky, Germany, Pennsylvania,
Michigan, Texas, China, and Utah. She always enjoyed a competitive game of bridge. She did not like to lose and her competitive side was known by many.
Alice found joy in singing at church and watching classic musicals, with The Sound of Music being her favorite. Once she returned to Indiana, Alice became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
She will be remembered with slipping her index finger to the corner of her mouth to remind others to be quiet, and the way she’d say “Bill” to get a reply of “yes, Alice”. With her beautiful blue eyes, she could say I love you without a word.
Braving the journey with Alzheimer's with courage and grace, Alice is leaving behind a trail of inspiration and cherished moments. She departed from us on Good Friday, April 29, 2024, to join all those gone before her, waiting on her with a deck of cards and fresh Texas sun brewed ice tea.
A celebration of life memorial service for Alice will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208. Located in the Gothic Chapel, entering through 34TH Street Gate.
