She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School and worked as a clerk typist for the State of Indiana until retiring in 1992. Dorothy Steward, a neat, well-polished lady, served as a licensed beautician for 40 years.
Sister Dorothy was saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost at the age of 24 years old at Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, when it was located on Congress Street. Down through the years, she delighted in serving her local church, Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, as a choir member (one of the first!) Sunday School teacher, Pastor’s helper, Hospitality President for over 25 years and faithfully led the local Prayer and Bible Band for over 50 years, until her health no longer allowed her to do so.
An Evangelist Missionary, she served all three of her pastors (Superintendent James L. Sanders, Pastor John C. Davis and Pastor J. Rashad Jones) well. Central District, now called James L. Sanders Memorial District, was greeted by her smiling face as the District Registrar for many years! A true servant of the Lord, Missionary Dorothy Steward was coordinator of the Indiana Second Jurisdiction Women’s Department Prayer Breakfasts and served as Assistant Secretary to the Jurisdictional Department of Women for State Mothers and Supervisors: Mother Vera Grant, Mother Ida M. Sanders, Mother Felicia Simmons and now Supervisor Carolyn Anderson.
Mother and Evangelist Missionary Dorothy Steward was kind, easily entreated and a devout saint of God. She could always find the good in all people. Mother Steward loved her family, church family and most of all, she loved the Lord.
Dorothy Mae Polk Steward answered the call of her Savior and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 1:05 a.m. embraced by love from her son and daughter-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Henry Cruite, husband: John Steward, brothers: Frank T. Polk, Booker T. Polk Jr., Ronald and Donald Polk, daughter: Constance D. Smith, and granddaughter: Dawnyett Smith Taylor.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons: Robert L. Jackson and Thomas D. (Tammy) Hatcher; one sister: Jean Polk; granddaughters: Erica Patterson, Victoria Herring, Briana Hatcher and LaNae Hatcher; grandsons: Philip Smith, Eric Smith, Christopher Hatcher, Richard Hatcher, and Edris Hatcher; the Cruite children; the Steward children; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
Evangelist Missionary Dorothy Polk Steward will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered, by her Sanders Temple Church family, James L. Sanders Memorial District, and Indiana Second Jurisdiction.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Friday, September 8, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205. A visitation will occur Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205. A Celebration of Life will occur Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205.
