At an early age Joseph was baptized at St. John Community Baptist Church in Alabama. He later moved to Indianapolis and joined New Bethel Baptist Church, then Little Zion Baptist Church. In 1973, he became a founding member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Joshua Cutler. Joseph was a devoted member, Deacon and Trustee at Mt. Pisgah; he became chairman of the Deacon board.
Joseph was a graduate of Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, where he came in contact with politicians that influenced him to help Indianapolis be a better place to live. He participated in many sit-ins, with favorable results.
Joseph married his wife, of 64 years, Rozzetta Moore. "For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death."
Before becoming an owner and operator of Joe's Fish Market for 45 years, Joseph worked as a concrete truck driver for Carson Concrete, Jones Ready Mix and Indianapolis Ready Mix.
Joseph, known as Mr. Joe, contributed much to the community "fed the hungry, clothed children in need, donated to various organizations and sponsored a baseball and bowling team.
Joseph enjoyed sports. He attended 500 mile races, world series, Super Bowls, basketball games and boxing events.
Joseph was a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was a 32° member of Shriners (Persian Temple No. 46) and Trinity Lodge #18. He also belonged to the Flying Eight and Dukes social clubs.
Joseph departed this life Thursday, January 13, 2022, at 90 years of age. He will be sadly missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Billingslea and brother Ernest Cumberlander. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Rozzetta; Sister, Yvonne Stanford, Lanett, Alabama. Brothers, Arthur Cumberlander, Lanett, Alabama; Howard (Sandra) Cumberlander, Lanett, Alabama; and Rudolph Cumberlander, Indianapolis, IN. Daughter, Winter Cumberlander, Indianapolis, IN. Sister-in-law, Glaydell Cumberlander, Columbus, Ohio. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
