Services for Billy Alexander Laney, 85, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Ashland United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Joshua, Nikolas, and Bruce Laney, Jr, Alexander, Jacob and Zachary Kirby, Michael D. Burton and Charles F. Burton III.
Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The Shriners Hospital or Ashland United Methodist Church.
Mr. Laney passed away at home on Saturday, May 12, 2018. He was with his wife of 17 years, Bobbie Burton Laney. Born September 17, 1932, in Pageland, SC, he was a son of the late Bruce Leroy and Etta Mae McManus Laney. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Louise Nelson Laney; two sons Billy A. Laney, Luke Laney; brothers, John Bruce, Amon LeRoy; sisters Virginia Guice, Margie Moore, Georgia Leuth, and Jerry Laney.
Bill retired from the United States Air Force after 25 years of service and the SC Department of Corrections CCI after 18 years of service. He was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church. Bill was a Master Mason with the Earlwood Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite and Jamil Shrine Temple.
He is survived by wife Bobbie Burton Laney; sons, Craig Allan (Jeannie) of Tomball, TX., Bruce David (Ana) of Elgin, SC, James Richard (Jimmie) of West Columbia, SC, Billy Ray (Kandie) of Lexington, SC,; and daughter, Susan Laney Kirby (Ben) of Chapin SC; stepson, Charles L (Sherry) Burton of Swansea, SC; ten grandchildren, Joshua, Bruce Jr. and Nikolas Laney, Alexander (Faith), Jacob and Zachary Kirby, Jamie (Lee) Laney Culbreth, Jessica (James) Laney Ford, Kendall Janae Laney, Blakeleigh Rae Laney; four great-grandchildren, Sydney and Presslee Culbreth and Ella Laney, and Makiley Ford. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Sarah Laney of Indian Trail, NC, and Johanna (Jim) Caylor of Richland WA; sisters, Dean Matney of Cayce, Sylvia Rock of West Columbia; multiple nieces and nephews who each brought him joy.
Billy Laney enjoyed life up till the very end. Bill was blessed by his wife, Bobbie, and her family for 17 years. They loved him as their own and we are forever thankful to call them family. Dad loved spending time with his family, mowing the yard, gardening, playing double-deck pinochle with his sister-in-law & her husband, bluegrass music, Fox news, bowling, square dancing and quick trips to Cherokee.
The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. We are confident that dad and mom are together and because of our faith in Jesus Christ, we know that we will one day be reunited with them.
