Jewel Chimes Rotholz
February 28, 1925 – March 6, 2018
IRMO - Jewel Chimes Rotholz, 93, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2018 at Pruitt Health Blythewood. She was predeceased by Norman, her loving husband of 64 years. In addition, she was predeceased by her parents of New York and her younger brother, David Chimes. The beloved mother of four sons, she delighted in the fact that all four work in university settings: Dr. Stephen Rotholz (Steffanie), Dr. David Rotholz (Julie), Jonathan Rotholz (Shelley) and Dr. Daniel Redwood (Beth). She leaves behind seven grandchildren: Rueben, Anna, Eli, Joshua, Celeste, Jonah, and Gracie, as well as three great grandchildren, Sierra, Riley, and Lilou. Mrs. Rotholz touched the lives of many with her friendly spirit, genuine charm and many varied interests. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, she called South Carolina home for the last 18 years of her life. She earned her undergraduate degree from Hunter College and her graduate degree from the College of New Rochelle. Jewel developed curricula for non-English speakers and spent her career teaching English as a second language to elementary students in Mount Vernon, NY. Her career was remembered by the wonderful stories of the children she served and the many reports of their later academic success. Jewel admired the beauty of nature and had many happy days enjoying the woods and ocean. She and Norman gave the appreciation of the natural world to their children who continue to enjoy this in their lives. With Norman, she appreciated classical music and played the piano with great joy. A voracious reader, she enjoyed mysteries, heartwarming novels, and a good biography. Jewel’s room at Generations of Irmo was filled with books and until her final days, she could be found with a book in her lap. She revered the life of the mind without pretention. She particularly cherished the company of her family and always went out of her way to make all guests, family and friends alike, feel at home. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Generations of Irmo who provided Jewel with love and care for the last nine years of her life. A celebration of life will be held in Brevard, North Carolina at a later date. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.

Norman and Jewel were members of Tree of Life Congregation, which is where I met them. Together they were one. Jewel was a special lady who had many stories to tell and you wanted to hear more. She will be missed, but will now be at peace with Norman.
