The Rev. R. Douglas Fritz Sr.

January 18, 1927July 28, 2020

Rev. Robert Douglas Fritz, D.D., 93 of Savannah Georgia died on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Born January 18, 1927, in Waukesha, Wisconsin he was the son of Rev. Charles E. and Rose Stump Fritz. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Anne Mclintock Fritz. Doug was a devoted Lutheran pastor and loving father. Doug was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College and Southern Lutheran Theological Seminary. During his 34 years of ministry Doug served churches in North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina. Doug and his wife Anne retired to Columbia, SC in 1980 before moving to Savannah in 2008.

Survivors include his two sons Robert Douglas, Jr. (Kathy) of Savannah, Georgia and David of Ocala, Fl. In addition, two grandchildren Kimberly (David) and Doug III (Leslie) and three great grandchildren all of whom he was thrilled to get to know and enjoy.

During Doug’s notable ministry he founded several new ministry organizations and expanded ministry, outreach, and growth in each parish he served. He served on a wide range of community and church synodical committees including the Board of Trustees for Lenoir Rhyne University. Doug, and the love of his life Anne, enjoyed square dancing, foreign travel, antiquing, entertaining friends, and especially entertaining each other. Doug had an immense curiosity and an interest in almost everything. In his retirement he enjoyed collecting and restoring antique music boxes and collecting other mechanical musical instruments. He was proud to be the primary caregiver for his wife Anne during her final years.

A private service for the family was held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, 407 St. Andrews Rd, Columbia, SC 29210 where Doug was laid to rest.

“Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.”

I am so sorry to hear of Mr Fritz’s passing. He and my dad shared a dining table at Morningside. He was my dad’s first new friend when he moved there last December. Prayers for you all.

Dear Ones of Doug: The Grace and Peace of our Lord Jesus be with you. One of my favorite memories of Doug was when he was at LTSS (and my dad was one of his profs and Doug was one of my "heroes"), and he installed a keyboard in his car, powered by a blower off the engine! He was just part of an amazing family which touched the Keck (and so many other) lives. May you know the Peace and Comfort our God gives us all!
In Christ's love, David & Diana
