Herman was born on June 7, 1927 in Jackson, MS to Tyler and Mary (Hackett) Abbey. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1946 after serving 2 years in the United States Navy during World War II. He was trained as a Linotype operator and worked 42 years for numerous newspapers in Mississippi including 34 years for the Clarion Ledger. On June 18, 1961, he married Lorene Goodnight. They raised two sons, Herman Jr. and James "Mike".
Herman was well known as a very frugal person, but spared no expense in taking care of his family over the last 57 years. He was a very purpose driven Christian individual while finding time to enjoy coin collecting, old western movies, and Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints football.
Herman was preceded in death by his brothers Joe, Floyd, and Julian and sisters Beula, Anna Belle, and Jessie.
He is survived by his wife Lorene, his children, Herman Jr. (Phyllis) and James "Mike" (Kristie), his grandchildren Brent, Tiffany, Taylor and Jacob and great-grandchildren Emerson and Gage.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at Lakewood Funeral Home on Clinton Blvd. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Home at 10 o’clock a.m. with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
