

Charles William Kent Gamble, 88, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2020 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where he lived in his retirement. Born in Charlottesville, VA, he lived for over thirty-eight years in Wilmington, Delaware, where he raised his children. With his family, he was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church.
Mr. Gamble graduated from the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA in 1950, and in 1954 from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the DKE fraternity, the Eli Banana Society, and played basketball, a three-year starter. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, mainly in Japan, he entered the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating in 1960. In subsequent years he followed the footsteps of generations of his family, serving in several capacities in the development of The University, including as a trustee of the College Foundation, and the restoration of Mr. Jefferson’s Rotunda. He practiced corporate law in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Trial Division, and in New York and Wilmington, Delaware, primarily in the chemical industry.
Charlie embraced life, family and friends with warmth, wit, and a great sense of fun.
He will be remembered by many for his accomplished New York taxi whistle, his near win
as Tallest Dad at dancing class, and his legendary tennis.
Youngest son of the late Eleanor Douglas Kent and Edward Watts Gamble, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA Charlie was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Edward Watts Gamble III and sister Elise Gamble Reed. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Judith Gamble, his sister Rodie Gamble Funkhouser Savage and his daughters Mary-Stuart Freydberg (Patrick), of Greenwich, CT and Peggy W. Gamble Taylor of Atlanta, GA and four grandchildren, Gamble, Mary-Ward, Emily, and Natalie.
A family memorial service will be held at a future date. His final resting place will be the University of Virginia cemetery.
