Evelyn Clay Woodard went home to Jesus on Thursday, May 26, 2011. She was born Evelyn Cavell Curtis on November 3, 1918, to Elizabeth (Mullins) and Burnett Curtis in Beckley, WV. She had one sister, Ruth Ann Lively who predeceased her. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High in Beckley. Evelyn married Aulda B. Clay who predeceased her after 41 years of marriage. In 2001, she married Raymond C. Woodard.
She was a loving mother to son, David Aulda Clay (Becky) and, daughter, Nancy Jane Murray (Stephen); grandmother “Bo,” to David Aulda Clay II (Erin) and Joseph Clay Murray; and, great grandmother to David Andrew Clay and Adam Blake Clay.
Evelyn worked in the insurance industry for many years and retired from Independent Life as an Executive Secretary in the Mortgage Department. She was active for many years in First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she was a member since 1978; Community Hospice Women’s Auxiliary, as well as a trained Hospice volunteer; St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary volunteer; and, the Republican Women’s Club.
Evelyn enjoyed travelling worldwide, playing hand bells at her church, cooking and baking and was always ready to bring freshly made baked goods to others. She was so loved by her family and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, 11924 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL, 32223 with Reverend Jeffrey Smith officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church Memorial Fund.
