“Let’s go out and do some good.”
- Gregg Louis Mattson
Every day at the end of role call, before he and his second family took to the streets, this is what he told them.
I’m sure a few of you have heard or seen by now, but for those who haven’t yet, on July 27th, 2019, dad took his last breath wrapped in the arms of his wife surrounded by people who loved him. He looked like a child. Innocent, peaceful, and full of love.
Many people have reached out to our family with prayers, loving words, and memories of him and the impact he had on their lives. Thank you all so much. For those of you asking what you can do or what we need, go out today and do some good. Honor him through acts of goodness because that’s what he tried to do every moment of his life. Pray for his wife and his father. Think of him when you hear a laugh.
To his brothers and sisters in blue. Go hunt for him. Stop people. Run tags. Use compassion when you can and when you can’t, know that he is proud of you for trying. He loved you all so much. I’ve never seen someone who loved what they did so much and for so long. Thank you all for sharing that with him. Let him live through you and the good you do now. Know that you are protected by him so that you can protect for him. He will always be a cop, and a great one too. I’m sure right now he’s switching shifts with Saint Peter outside of those pearly white gates and sharing a laugh.
My dad was a funny guy who loved with a fierceness and passion that was unmatched and sometimes when a heart is filled with so much love, it grows too big and our human body is not able to contain it. The love then spreads to the hearts that it shared love with.
That love is now in all of us.
If you have any memories you want to share with us, please do. Use the tag #DoSomeGood so we can find them. We have a friend putting a book together of all of your stories of him. Let us know how he loved you. Go out and do some good.
I love you dad.
