Jamil was born in Ramallah, Palestine in 1931 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1947. Along with his brother, Kanan, they started “Bateh’s Grocery” where Jamil worked tirelessly for over 50 years, before retiring in 2001. His desire to provide for his family, a steadfast work ethic, and caring for his customers was unsurpassed. In that store was where Jamil provided for his family, created educational opportunities for his children and educated his immediate and extended family members on the virtues of dedication, caring for others, and being a man of your word.
Jamil was a charter member of the Ramallah Club of Jacksonville and remained a prominent member until his passing. Jamil was a member of the St. George Antiochian Orthodox church.
Many knew Jamil as “the guy who rode his bike on San Jose.” For many years, while his health allowed it, after work or on days off, Jamil was known to ride his (one speed) bike along San Jose Blvd., down through San Marco, along River Road, down to the Riverwalk and then back to the Goodby’s Creek area before riding back home.
Jamil married the love of his life, Nuha, in 1952 and they recently celebrated 69 years of marriage. Together they raised a beautiful family and, after retiring 20 years ago, enjoyed more participation in the lives of his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Cido. The beautiful smile that was etched across his face when he saw one of his grandchildren was all they needed to see to know how special they were to him.
Jamil is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nuha, his daughter Sylvia Fore, sons Ricky P. Bateh (Sherri) and Mark A. Bateh (Lorraine), grandchildren Jennifer Matthews (Steven Belcher), Kristin Allen (Scott), Lilly Bateh, Jamil Bateh, Jordan Bateh, Hannah Bateh, Chandler Bateh and great grandson Steven Matthews. Jamil is also survived by the wives of his brothers. Wardeh (Rose) Bateh, Abla Bateh, and Rima Bateh and many in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, many who affectionately knew him as “Amo Jimmy.”
Jamil was predeceased by his parents Constantine and Nimeh Bateh and brothers Yousef, Mussa, Essa, and Kanan Bateh.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, with a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM at the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 6300 Bowden Road with the Very Rev.
