Joan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and soon to be great grandmother, passed away peacefully at home with family at her side on 4/2/2021, after a long illness. She was born in New Jersey on September 24, 1936. She was predeceased by her parents Yolanda and Vernon Polidor.
Joan graduated from Lasell Jr. College majoring in Retail. When Joan was 12, her mother opened a dress shop where she worked after school and on Saturdays. Hence, her love for retail and shopping!
She met Guy Selander, the love of her life, at age 16. They married after Guy finished medical school and his internship. The U.S. Army then kindly sent them to Jacksonville, FL. Joan played bridge and golf, and raised three wonderful children while Guy served his military duty.
After the military, Guy started his private practice, and Joan began volunteering as a fundraiser for many local charities. She took up tennis and played many years with the C Team at San Jose Country Club. She became active in the Duval County Medical Society Alliance becoming president in the 1970’s and becoming the first recipient of the Outstanding Auxilian Award in 1983. Later, as a Florida Medical Association Alliance district VP and fundraiser extraordinaire, Joan led the state of Florida in raising the most funds for the American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation (AMA-ERF).
As her children grew older, Joan started a new career becoming a travel agent and co-owner of River City Travel. She and her husband traveled the world making wonderful memories.
Joan is survived by Guy, her husband of 63 years, her daughter and caretaker Sandy Selander, her son Guy Jr. (Lori), her daughter Donna Jacoby (Robert), her grandchildren, Cameron Jacoby, Robert Jacoby, Stephanie Selander (Toby), Sara Selander Tatum (Alex), Catherine Selander, Melissa Selander, Nicolas Patino, Yolanda Patino, her sister, Barbara Kubichek (Albert) and her brother Vernon Polidoro (Dana Britt).
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. If you wish, donations may be made in memory of Joan Selander to Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) or Community Hospice.
