Bette Ann Howanitz, 79, of Margate, Florida, passed away on June 25, 2018. She was a long-time resident of Stuart and Port St. Lucie.

Bette Ann was born in Spring Valley, New York, on June 13, 1939, to Al and Rose Buckalter. After graduating from New York University, she began a career as a teacher. She moved with her son to Stuart, Florida in 1971, and two years later married Peter Howanitz, to whom she was married for 43 years. Bette Ann enjoyed the arts and for many years was active in the Barn Theatre in Stuart. In 1976, she also wrote and directed a play for children to help them learn about the U.S. Bicentennial.

Bette Ann was preceded in death by Peter, who passed away in September 2016; her parents; and a sister-in-law, Donna Mang.

Survivors include her son, Mark Sherman; sisters-in-law Sally Embree and Mary Seman, and brothers-in-law Donald Howanitz (Adrienne), John Howanitz (Laurel), and Bill Mang.

In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to make a donation of school supplies to a local school or to a charitable organization that provides supplies to students in need.
