1926-2018
Marjorie Louise Bean (nee Hanson), aged 92, died peacefully at home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL on December 14, 2018. Marjorie was born February 17, 1926 to Chester and Gladys Hanson in Newcomerstown, Ohio.
Marjorie was predeceased by her sister, Barbara McFadden, her brother, Chester Hanson, and her first son Bill (1965).
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, William J. (Bill) Bean, by six of her seven children, Jim, Thom, Carol, Phyllis, Barbara, and Marilyn, and by 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She attended Newcomerstown High School, and Stephens College in Missouri for a year, before marrying her high school sweetheart, Bill, on June 12, 1945. After living in Newcomerstown for 7 years, while Bill worked in the family clothing retail business (the Baltimore), Marge and Bill moved to Miami, FL for 3 years, where they resumed their college education at the University of Miami while raising their growing family. In 1956 they moved to New Orleans where she completed her undergraduate education at Tulane University and graduated with a Master’s Degree in mathematics in 1960, at the same time Bill completed medical school. Marjorie taught college level mathematics at LSUNO (Louisiana State University in New Orleans) while Bill completed radiology training at Tulane and began radiology practice in New Orleans in 1964.
Marjorie and Bill lived in New Orleans for 23 years, raising 7 children, before moving to Palm Beach Gardens, FL in 1979. Marjorie had an artistic gift, which she inherited from her mother and grandmother. After finishing her teaching career in the 70’s she took up the study of art for four years at LSUNO, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Over the next 30 years she created a remarkable portfolio of artistic work in multiple art forms, including metal sculpture, painting, silk screen, photo prints, molded clay and finally her pinnacle enduring achievement, stone sculpting, which she studied at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. She supplemented her stone sculpture training with several extended stay workshops in Pietrasanta, Italy, the “little Athens of Italy”, so named for its renowned marble sculpture artists. Her detached garage and garden house became her photographic and marble sculpture studio, where she labored daily, converting blocks of stone to finely chiseled figures and forms. Her artistic works have been the enduring pride and enjoyment of her family and community.
She completed her airplane pilot training in the early 80’s, begun years before in 1945 while at Stephens College, and with her instrument rating shared piloting duties with Bill, until they decided to cease flying at age 80. She became sufficiently self-trained in investment finance to manage the family retirement funds for 25 years.
Marjorie was a devoted wife and mother. She was attentive to each child and strove to see that each reached the fullest possible potential. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in North Palm Beach, where she found comfort and fellowship.
