Ken Ottewell 1928 -2020

Percival Kenneth Ottewell passed away in Salmon Arm, BC, in his 92nd year. Ken (known by most as “KO”) is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lois (Beck), sons Richard (Barbara Anne), Goderich, ON and Mike, Vernon, BC, sister Marjorie Sinclair, Gore Bay, ON and sister-in-law Jannett Ottewell, Wiarton, ON. Predeceased by his brother, Bev. Also survived by his grandchildren Jon (Candace) Ottewell, Amanda (Shauna) Cottrell, Laura (Michael) Poole, Jeremy (Maggie) Ottewell, Ryan Ottewell, Melissa (David) McMullan and great-grandchildren Owen, Eli, Callie, Nieva and Shane. He will be sadly missed by Joan Bloedel. KO taught building construction in Exeter, ON for most of his 35 year teaching career, instilling the love of woodworking and building in hundreds of his students. He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. After retiring, first to ACW and then to St. Ives, BC, he planted thousands of trees and built and erected hundreds of bird nesting boxes. His lifelong love of the outdoors has been passed on to his family and will be his legacy. No visitation or public funeral at KO’s request. Cremation has taken place. Private family service and interment at Colpoys Bay Cemetery, Wiarton, ON at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to The Jack Miner Bird Foundation (Jackminer.ca) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Lois and family
So many wonderful memories of our friendship over the years with your family. Your flowing expressiveness on the piano was always special to me when I had the opportunity to play my guitar with you.
I got to know Ken through my period of substitute teaching at the high school. Those were special times, and I’m sure your time out west continued to bring you happiness. So sad to accept the reality of our age and that we are losing many who are so dear to us.
Our sincerest condolences to you and your family.

Dear Lois:
Wayne and I have read, sadly, the notice of Ken's passing in the Goderich paper. Our condolences to you, Richard, Barbara Anne, Mike and families.
We remember, fondly, the visits to your farm in Ashfield and your comfortable hospitality. It seemed that Ken was at ease with whomever arrived and he took great pleasure in sharing stories about his farming adventures. He had a remarkable attitude and he continued to be an engaging personality. You shall miss him.
Thinking of you with love.

I met KO at my daughter and his granddaughter ‘s wedding. I remember well his speech. The love and pride he had for his granddaughter and the rest of his family was very evident.
Reading the memories on this site is evidence of a life well lived and how his life effected so many others in a positive way. What better legacy to leave.
May your loss be eased and the memories live on.

My children and I have so many wonderful memories of times spent with Ken and Lois. I am trying to think of one outstanding memory so that I don’t use a lot of space in the memory book .I must say that each time of visiting them in their environment was an adventure for us. My son Greg was especially excited to see Ken because Ken knew just what boys like to do. He took us fishing and both children caught a large pike fish. He taught Greg to row a boat and dock it. On one visit Ken brought Greg pieces of wood and they made an airplane. Greg comments that Ken had a very kind and soft heart for him . We all loved him.
