Eula Mae Allen was born in Texas on January 3, 1920 and reared there. Prior to marrying, she worked as a legal secretary. Several years after she married Robert C. Allen, Jr., they moved to the Kansas City area with their son. Three daughters were born in Kansas City before Robert’s job subsequently transferred them to several other cities. When it came to retirement time, Robert and Eula Mae were pleased to move back to Johnson County. Robert preceded Eula Mae in death after 48 years of marriage. In addition to her four children, Robert C. Allen, III (Merrigale), Peggy Kroupa, Shirley Allen, and Martha Marks (Bud), she had five grandchildren, Timothy Marks, Emily Gannon, A. John Slate, Heather Cooper, Ariana Thumann, and seven great grandchildren, Holland and Zoe Cooper, Sophia Thumann, Nathan and Audrey Schulz, Sophia Marks and River Gannon. Eleven years ago, she became acquainted with Hector and Erika Rios from the country of Columbia, who came to Kansas City to earn post graduate degrees at UMKC. Since they were her grandchildren’s ages and they developed such a close relationship, she “adopted” them as her grandchildren. Erika’s parents, Hector and Maria Elena Benavides, had to seek political asylum in this country and moved to Kansas City. They became Eula Mae’s “adopted” children. The Columbian family grew with the additions of Hector Rios’ sister, Paola Noll (Aaron), and Hector’s parents.
