OBITUARY

Jane Powassin

June 24, 1941February 12, 2020

Jane Powassin, Beloved Mamanan, Mom, Auntie and Sister, 78, of Windigo Island passed away unexpectedly Wednesday February 12, 2020 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Jane is survived by Charles “Sam” Gibbons, her children Maureen, Todd (Kim), Ella (Tim) Barkman and Cindy (Gary) Latimer, her sister Lorraine, her brother Harvey, 18 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews as well as numerous friends and acquaintances. She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Louise Powassin, her brothers Alex and Joe and sisters Dorothy, Norma and Patsy.

Jane was born June 24, 1941 to Frank and Louise (Major) Powassin and lived her whole life on Windigo Island. She loved to fish, read True Story magazines and Archie comics, bake cinnamon bread, spend time with her grands and great grands, she loved listening to George Jones and yes, she liked to go to the casino.

Jane was a free spirit that loved to laugh, she was an avid crossword/fill-in puzzler and could often be found hunched over a jigsaw puzzle on the table. She loved watching hockey and would often travel to watch her grandsons play.

Jane worked for many years as a Family Support Worker with OTFS and most recently as the Ojibway Language teacher at Windigo Island School.

Wake will be held at the Windigo Island School Sunday February 16, 2020 @ 1:00 PM with burial to be held Monday afternoon on Windigo Island. Traditional ceremony to be officiated by Peter White Mide’kiwenzi.
