Eric was born into a loving family within the North Caribou Lake First Nation. He spent his early years in Weagamow amidst his community. When his health issues required relocation to Kenora, his family carefully chose a foster family to ensure that Eric continued to be cared for with love. Both his birth family and his Kenora family worked together to Eric surrounded with activities and connections that brought joy to his daily life.
Eric loved loud music, slapstick comedy and good food. Despite his challenges, he exhibited great determination to achieve his own personal objectives which ranged from making his own style choices to sneaking dessert before dinner. Eric was very social and initiated many friendships with his great grin. He loved travelling and enjoyed his Edmonton vacations as much as his fishing trips and other outings with his northern family.
Eric Sakchekapo is survived by his mother Cheryl (John) Sakchekapo, grandparents Caleb and Greta Sakchekapo, aunts Sheila (Mike) Gabrie and Karen Sakchekapo. He also leaves behind his siblings, Josephine (Newton), Joss and Dallas Sakchekapo, step-siblings Lenny and Lyle Sakakeesic, Renee (Brendon) Patawanick, Shane and Shaun Queqish, Raine Bighead, Johnny, Tyson and Kristen McCallum, nephews and nieces Kreedan Sakchekapo-Williams, Kurt Sakchekapo-Tait, Emory Patawanick, Troy Sakchekapo Jr., Chinodin, Justice and Leon Patawanick, Sophie and Leonardo (LJ) Roundhead. He also leaves his grandparents Mayo and Salome (Grace) Matawapit and aunts Celinda (Sakchekapo) Patayash, Yvonne Matawapit, Myra Chikone, Claudia and Clarissa Matawapit, uncles Caleb Jr. (Nancy and Leo (Judy) Sakchekapo.
He also leaves numerous relatives and other extended family members in the community of Sachigo Lake First Nation and in Bearskin Lake First Nation.
Eric was predeceased by his father, Joseph Roy Sakchekapo, brothers Troy Sakchekapo and Ontario Matawapit. Great grandparents Daniel and Rebecca Mekanak, Tommy and Eva Adams and numerous other family members.
Eric’s Kenora family included his foster parents Darcy and Lianne Larson, siblings (Ashley, Nicole, Lauren, Jewel and Darrell) and their extended families. He will also be missed by missed by his foster grandparents Ben and Nan Normand and his best friend Verena Strang.
Services and interment will be held in Weagamow. A Memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date.
