There was nothing that Joan loved more than her sons and grandsons. They were her life and they always had a safe place to go, as long as she was alive. You were all blessed to have her endless love and support.

I used to stay at her house, with Ryan, when we were teenagers. She always treated me like family. I rarely see Ryan now, but he is my oldest friend. We had great times there.

When I saw Joan in later years, she would always start talking about old times, when Ryan and I would stay with her and how much we had grown up. I always felt like she derived so much joy from seeing her people do well.

She seemed like such a unique person to me. She was full of love and life, but never seemed soft. She was energetic and opinionated. She was tough but supportive. She would quickly take her kids and grandkids to task, but also supported and defended them endlessly. She loved to watch them do well. She was mentally sharp. She was a nice person. I can genuinely say that I have never met anyone like her.

I know that her family is devastated and I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sorry that I won't get to see everyone tonight. Mike, David and Rodney, it would certainly be great to see all of you again sometime.

Joan Strickland, thank you for always treating me well when I was kid. You will be very sadly missed. I am sad today, knowing that you have passed on. Rest knowing that your family loves you as much as you loved them. God rest your beautiful soul.
