Woods, Richard (Dick) Eugene, 88, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018 surrounded by his family at Ben Atchley Veterans' Home in Knoxville, TN. Dick was born in 1930 to James E. Woods and Arlettie Perry Woods of Knoxville, TN. He was the last to survive of their seven children. Dick attended Rule High School and then served in the U.S. Army for four years, where he received five bronze stars as part of a medical corps during the Korean War. Later, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 30 years serving in a variety of positions. Dick became a member of the Woodlawn Christian Church in 1965. He was also a member of the Masonic Temple, Burlington Lodge for over 50 years. Dick is survived by his wife of 68 years, Wilma Edmonds Woods; his two children, Richard E. Woods, Jr. and Cheryl Woods-Hill; their spouses Janice Kidd and Michael Hill; and his two grandsons, David Woods (and wife Melissa) of Norfolk, VA and Jonathan Woods of Franklin, TN. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including two special nieces who were like sisters, Ella Mae Woods Bise and Wanda Woods Byerly.
The family thanks the staff of the D wing of Ben Atchley Veterans' Home for their attentive and compassionate care during the last few months of Dick's life and is grateful for the many encouraging visits of Dean Davis, Woodlawn's Minister for Seniors. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at the Woodlawn Christian Church, 4339 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920; a service conducted by Dean Davis and Dr. David Eubanks will follow. The entombment will be at 10:00 am on May 3rd at Berry Highland South, 9010 East Simpson Road, Knoxville, TN 37920.
