Wilma Joy Higgins-Custis
November 23, 1952 – September 13, 2019
Wilma Joy Higgins-Custis was born on November 23rd 1952 in the parish of St. Ann Jamaica. She was the 9th of fourteen children and the third of five girls. She was given the middle name Joy because of her countenance. She was educated in the Jamaican public school system. She pursued higher education at Caron Hall Training Institute in St Mary, Jamaica and Mico Teachers College located in Kingston, Jamaica. She got her love for teaching from her mother and taught at Alderton Primary School in St Ann and St Jude's Primary School in Kingston. In 1978 she migrated to the United States. She resided in Baltimore, Maryland where she attended Morgan State University. She later relocated to Summit, New Jersey were she taught early childhood education at the Summit Child Care Center. She later became an administrator at The Center. While in Summit New Jersey, she met her husband of 35 years Booker T Custis. Their Union produced one daughter Anja Marquita Custis. Joy as she was affectionately called was a mother figure for many, including younger siblings, nieces and nephews. At an early age Joy committed her life to the Lord. She was very active in church ministry and held rolls such as church secretary, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, exhorter and prayer warrior. Many can recall her interaction on prayer lines like Endurance Prayer Line and Chain Breakers Prayer Line. Joy enjoyed several hobbies which included antiquing, gardening, and cooking. She was an avid reader, wonderful orator, and a great debater. Joy loved her family and friends very much and she was an ever ready encourager. She truly was an intricate part of the family Circle. In 2016 Joy and her immediate family relocated to Florida to be closer to her Mother, extended family and friends. After a fierce battle with chronic illness Joy peacefully departed THIS life. She is sorely missed! Joy was proceeded in death by her father, three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband Booker T, her daughter Anja, her mother Ida Higgins, six brothers, one sister, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends. All who will mourn her deeply. She is now absent from the body and present with the Lord.
