Cletus C. Cary, retired United Methodist minister, peacefully entered that horizon surrounded by his family on September 30, 2015.
Cletus was born on March 19, 1931, in Waterloo, IA. He was the son of Roger V. and Bessie B. Berry Cary. He grew up in Iowa, moved to McPherson, KS, and graduated from McPherson College. He then moved to Chicago, IL, and graduated from Bethany Theological Seminary. His early studies in music also led him to teach vocal and instrumental music in Moundridge and Hesston, Kansas while serving at Hesston United Methodist Church.
He also served Kansas United Methodist Churches in McPherson, and St. Paul's, Dawson and Waco Avenue in Wichita. He served as interim pastor at Epworth and St. Luke's UMC in Wichita. He retired from pastoral service after more than 20 years.
Cletus, then, formed and managed the Dawson Travel Ministry and, later, owned the Omni Bus Service, after which he managed the Wichita branch of Kinkaid Coach Lines. He was able to extend his ministry to many groups through these experiences. He wore many hats during his career and retirement, always feeling that if a job needed to be done, he could find a way to do it—and he did! His family and friends know that we are all truly blessed to have had him for so many years as our mentor, and leader. His influence will be felt for many generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Wayne, and Eugene.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucy Kendall Cary; daughters, Charla (Joe) Brandel of St. Louis, MO, and Sandy Cary, Lakeway, TX; 4 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
The family wants to extend their gratitude to our many friends for the prayers, calls, loving deeds and gifts, and their many expressions of support.
The Memorial Service celebrating Cletus' life will be held on Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 PM, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 13th and North Broadway, Wichita, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given, in honor of Cletus Cary, to St. Paul's UMC, Wichita, KS. Condolences may be sent to the family at the Lakeway, TX, Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home website at www.wcfish.com.
