Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Elaine graduated from Schenley HS, Montefiore Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh with honors, and years later after moving to Teaneck, NJ earned a Master’s Degree in General Counseling And Mental Health from Montclair University.
A gifted nurse and educator, Elaine worked for a number of years at the Bergenfield NJ Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center specializing in psychiatric care, as Director of Psychiatric Day Care Treatment and later employed at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J., both on the nursing staff as well as well as on the nursing school faculty as a Senior Psychiatric Nursing Instructor.
Despite all of her academic and career accomplishments, her pride came from the family she raised with Norman, often working night shifts in the hospital so she could be present for her boys.
A voracious reader, Elaine would often toggle between two or more books at a time. Always efficient, she took the liberty of skimming over pages that didn’t add to the narrative.
An avid traveler, she visited five of the six continents with her husband, attested to by her home’s eclectic decor.
Elaine was a prodigious walker, walking up to 10 miles a day (with a book in her hand) in the warmer months as her major form of exercise.
Upon retirement, Elaine moved to Lake Ridge, an active senior adult community in Toms River, where she was a member of the original Welcoming Committee, The Women’s Club, The Shalom Club, and the Wine Club.
To her husband, Norman, she was his best friend, confidant, rock, and constant companion through 65 years of marriage which would have been celebrated in March, 2024.
She is survived by her husband, Norman; sons Mark (Susan Chaityn) Neil, Daniel (Karin Feldman); eight grandchildren, Jessica Lebovits (Nolan Gardner), Jaclyn, Jake, Jenna, Ethan, Jordyn, Jamie, Jaylyn and great granddaughter Sylvie Gardner; sister Myra Maker (Howard); niece Elizabeth Maker Cummings (Paul) and predeceased by niece Ellen Maker Malsky.
