It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Shirley Harrop passed away late Thursday September 21, 2023. Shirley lost her long battle with Alzheimer's disease and passed away peacefully. She was surrounded by family throughout her final days.
Shirley was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend to many. She was a kind and loving person who had a wonderful sense of humor and was adored by those that knew her.
Shirley Margaret McInnes was born on January 28, 1941, in Leven Scotland to John McLean McInnes and Janet McInnes (Nee McDonald).
John and Janet also had a son, Ian, who is Shirley’s younger brother. Ian also immigrated to Canada and married Susan McInnes (Nee Cain) who had two children together, Michelle and Laura McInnes.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, George Harrop, whom she married on August 10, 1963. Shirley immigrated to Canda with George and became a Canadian citizen on December 9, 1976.
Shirley gave birth to Lorraine Margaret Harrop, who married Paul Jason Jones. Lorraine and Paul gave Shirley her first grandchild when Mathew Conor Jones was born on November 28, 2001. Shirley’s second child is Mark McAdam Harrop, who married Nicole Laurie Daney and they gave Shirley two grandchildren Em Adeline Daney Harrop and Neve Rose Daney Harrop.
Shirley had a long career working as an Administrative Assistant most notably at Burrard Shipyards and at BC Parks. She made many good friends during her working life. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and was an avid reader. Later in life, Shirley spent most of her time fussing over her beloved West Highland Terrier, Sophie.
Shirley worked tirelessly for years to hold a job, look after her ageing mother, maintain a home and raise her children. She was a loyal wife and was truly devoted to her family. She selflessly gave to those around her.
Shirley is survived by her children, Lorraine (Paul) and Mark (Nicole), Brother Ian (Susan) and grandchildren, Mathew, Em and Neve.
A Celebration of Shirley’s life is planned with details to follow.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.
