Charles “Chuck” L. Richard, age 85 of Lansing, MI passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021. He was born on November 9, 1935 in Hastings, MI the son of William Wayne and Mabel Mae (Champlin) Richard.

Chuck has been a resident of Lansing since 1958. He graduated from Michigan State University College of Engineering earning a Bachelor’s Degree. Chuck then went on to work as an Electrical Engineer for the Michigan Department of Transportation for 38 years. Faith and church were a large part of his life, this is evident in Chuck being an active member of Pennway Church of God since 1964. He also bowled on the church league for many years. He was an avid MSU Football, Basketball and Hockey fan. Chuck enjoyed doing yardwork, gardening, hunting, fishing, riding dirt bike motorcycles and traveling. Spending time with family and friends was something he loved to do, but spending time with his granddaughters that he adored made his heart smile.

Chuck is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Daniel) Quisenberry and his granddaughters, Jessica Quisenberry and Brooke Quisenberry. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved wife of 57 years, Elaine Richard who passed away in 2014 also a brother that passed away at birth, William Wayne Richard.

Couldn’t help but share this favorite photo of mine . . . Pictured is Chuck--20 years old, his two beagles, me in the stroller--1 year old, and Kathy--6 years old. From my earliest days on, Chuck was a positive, fun, supportive presence in my life, and in the lives of all his nieces and nephews. The fond memories of good times, laughter, and supportive gestures are innumerable and will continue to enhance our lives going forward . . . We were all most fortunate to have such a wonderful uncle. Uncle Chuck will be sorely missed.

Our family was blessed to see Chuck this summer at the end of July. With our families scattered, it is seldom that we are all able to be together. Nieces and nephews and their families met together on a Sunday afternoon, coming from Montana, Oregon, California, and Arizona. We know now that the timing was perfect. This picture shows Chuck that day, looking happy and well. Chuck was a much loved uncle! While we would each treasure another conversation and hug, the thought of having him united in heaven with Aunt Elaine brings a smile to our faces.

This 1998 photo shows Pennway men hiking the Porcupine Mountains in the UP. Chuck is on the right end. He was a leader and enjoyed our times in the wilderness, whether hiking, motorcycle riding with the Pennway Angels, deer hunting or fishing. When Chuck was involved, we knew it would be a great trip. Great memories. L to R: Vern Smith, Ron Decker, Roy Switzer, Ray Warner, Roger Hersey, Roy Murry, Terry Specker, and Chuck.

We join Chuck's friends in mourning his passing. He was a wonderful, gifted, generous and hardworking man, a dear friend who enjoyed the outdoors, loved his family, and spent countless hours volunteering for the church. My memory is flooded with images of him hiking in Michigan and Arizona, of dinners with Chuck and Elaine at the restaurants they introduced us to when we joined them in Scottsdale. I see him in the stern of the boat as we fished in Canada, or leading the group as we hiked in the Porcupines in the UP, or Pinnacle Peak in AZ, or rode motorcycles through the state forest with the the "Pennway Angels!" In Arizona we walked many an art fair, as he picked out another Hopi Kachina for his collection, or walked the Phoenix Open or the Barrett-Jackson car show, or worked at every MSU football game for over two decades. At Pennway, we worked along side as he volunteered to build a church in Barbados, or as he solved a tough tech issue with the church computers. He was an amazing, generous man, a friend, and his memory will live on with Paula and me for the rest of our lives. RIP, my friend. We truly miss you.
