Eleanor Melvin McDowell (nee Mitchell) passed away at age 95 on April 16, 2019 in Summerlin, Nevada. Eleanor was born in Akron, Ohio on August 25, 1923 to Fred and Ruth Mitchell. She grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, received a Bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, a Master’s degree from The University of Akron, and taught in the Cuyahoga Falls school system for 28 years. She was married to Eugene Melvin for 50 years. Following his death she married her high school sweetheart David McDowell and moved to Summerlin Nevada in 1999.
Eleanor loved to travel all over the world from Europe to South America to China to Alaska, making new friends wherever she went. In Summerlin she joined and took great pleasure dancing with the Sun City Dance Company. As a member of the Mountain View Presbyterian Church she sang in the choir, played bells, and found a second home with her beloved church family. One of her favorite pastimes was entertaining her many friends in her home.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Eugene Melvin and David McDowell, her daughter Nancy Melvin and her grandson Matthew Elicker. She is survived by her son Randal (Catherine Waller) Melvin, daughter Deborah (Ned ) Elicker, granddaughter Megan (Neil Binegar) Elicker and her great granddaughter Beatrice Binegar.
Services will be held at Mountain View Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception following at the church.
