Geneva Lyndon Turnmire Lackey passed away on January 10, 2019 at her Hickory home following a brief illness. She was born on July 7, 1922 to Ralph Dula Turnmire and Bessie Keller Turnmire. She was married for 69 years to a childhood playmate, Norman S. Lackey. Surviving is their daughter, Rebecca Lyndon Lackey Withers and son-in-law, Gary L. Withers of Hickory and her special cat, Mr. Blackie Lackey.
Following her graduation from Kings Creek High School in Caldwell County, she completed nurse’s training at Crowell Hospital in Lincolnton, North Carolina. She worked as a Registered Nurse, first as a surgical nurse and later as an industrial nurse. Always believing in education, Geneva received her Bachelor of Arts in Nursing Education from Appalachian State University in 1981.
She had a lifetime enjoyment of sewing, needlework and crafts of all kinds which she shared with her Girl Scout troops as leader. Geneva was also her family’s geneaographer and spent much time in her later years researching her ancestors and family connections.
She was a devout Christian and member of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory. She especially enjoyed the church’s TV ministry when she could not attend services, due to being the caregiver for her mother in the home and then her husband.
Her funeral will be held at Pendry’s Funeral Home, Lenoir, North Carolina on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 2:00pm. The family will receive prior to the service from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. The service will be conducted by Dr. Andrew Rawls of Viewmont Baptist Church.
