Shirley Kathleen Smith Benfield “Kat”, 95 of Morganton, formerly of Lenoir, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Morganton Long Term Care.

“Kat” was born on March 20, 1923 in Caldwell County to the late John Eli Smith and Bessie Smith. She was a lifetime member of Union Grove Baptist Church in Lenoir, and retired after over 40 years of service for Century Furniture Company.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Sue Sigmon and husband Ned of Morganton and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A funeral service to honor Mrs. Benfield will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Union Grove Baptist Church in Lenoir with Rev. Sam Craven officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Roger Sigmon, Daryl Sigmon, Evan Sigmon, Donnie Morrison, Tracy Bolick and Josh Bolick. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Zeke Sigmon,

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Union Grove Baptist Church.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers,2 memorials be made to Burke Hospice at 1721 Enon Road Valdese, NC 28690 or to Union Grove Baptist Church, Prayer Garden Fund at 1808 Union Grove Road, Lenoir, NC 28645
