Irene Preiser (Strelzoff) was born on Jan. 17, 1934 in Liege, Belgium. She moved to New York City in 1939 and attended Bronx High School of Science and Goucher College where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude in International Relations in 1954. She married Aaron Preiser in 1955 and had two children, David in 1957 and Miriam (Mimi) in 1960. She received a Masters Degree in International Relations from Rutgers Newark in 1978. Irene and Aaron lived in North Plainfield NJ, Atlanta GA, Livingston NJ, Stavanger Norway, London, England, Thousand Oaks CA and Morristown NJ. She was president of the Livingston Chapter of the American Jewish Congress in the 1970’s and was president of Bnai Brith Conejo Valley Chapter in the early 1990’s.
Irene had a lifelong commitment to the work of protecting Human Rights for all people, working through the League of Women Voters, AAUW, National Council of Jewish Women, American Jewish Congress and Bnai Brith. A native Russian speaker, she was active in the first round of resettlement of Soviet Jews to Essex County in the early 1970s. Irene loved to read, play bridge, and travel throughout the world.
Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband Aaron and her beloved grandson Ben. She leaves behind her son David Preiser, daughter-in-law Jane Preiser, daughter Mimi Zukoff, son-in-law Dr. Paul Zukoff, grandchildren Jessica and Robert Nitkin, Sam and Sarah Zukoff, Lexi Preiser, and Greg Preiser, great grandsons Noah and Oliver Nitkin. She will be sorely missed.
