

Mr. Weinberg was born in Bluefield, West Virginia in 1925 to Harry and Sadye Weinberg as the youngest of five siblings. He graduated from Beaver High School at age 16. He then served on active duty in the navy during WWII as a Lieutenant, and after the war as a naval reservist he served in the Submarine Service. After completing his education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with two degrees in engineering, he joined New York Telephone, remaining at the Bell System for 38 years until his retirement in 1986. During his employment at AT&T he was at various times, Marketing Director, Director of Federal Relations, and served as first President of the AMPS Corporation, an AT&T subsidiary formed to provide the first cellular mobile telephone service. In that latter capacity, Mr. Weinberg became known through the mobile telephone community as the driving force for what was then a novel and innovative communications service.
Mr. Weinberg was active in community affairs in Millburn/Short Hills, serving as vice president of the School Board and Chairman of the Planning Board. In addition, he was founder and President of MAMP International, an international social club with membership in the U.S. and U.K.
Mr. Weinberg is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, the former Betty Gluckman, his two daughters, Jo Turpin of Millburn, NJ and Amy (& David) Feldman of Morris Township, NJ, three grandsons, Max Turpin, Adam (& Tati) Feldman, and Matthew Feldman.
Services will be held at Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills on Tuesday February 27th at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Atlantic Health System Hospice.
