Dr. Sonya Rubin

Sonya Rubin (Sondak) of West Orange, NJ, died May 14, 2019. Born in 1929 in Jersey City, she lived most of her life in South Orange.
Ms. Rubin was a graduate of Rutgers University (1950), after which she taught school in the South Orange/Maplewood/Millburn school systems. She went on to get an M.A. in education from Seton Hall (1975), and a PhD in Philosophy and History of Education from NYU (1985).
She became an Adjunct Professor at NYU, where she taught several courses in History of Modern Education in the 1980s.
Over her career, she was active in the PTA, and in fundraising for Hadassah Hospital. She received a National Award from Hadassah for enrolling more new members than anyone else in the US, and was a Vice President of Hadassah for four years. She travelled widely, in Europe, Asia and South America.
Pre-deceased by her husband, Irving, and by her daughter Donna, she is survived by two daughters, Caren Rubin and Madlyn Goldberg, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
