Colonel (R) Byron H. Bell, 82, departed this world peacefully at home July 30, 2018. His memory will be cherished by his dedicated and loving wife of 47 years, Neva (Gabhart) Bell, three daughters, Teena Freibert (Michael), Vicki Bell, and Jackie Ramsey (Butch), Five grandchildren Ryan Freibert (Alexa), Emily Boulier (Mark), Erin Freibert, Anna V. Bell, Sylvia Ramsey, 9 month old great grandson Ellis Jay Boulier, and special family friend Rose Fortman (Tom).
A graduate of Southern H.S., he earned a B.S. in Industrial Arts from Western KY State College and Masters of Science in Education from IU, as well as a Specialist in Education degree from UofL.
In 1959, he began his career in education, first as an Industrial Arts teacher and cross country coach at Southern Jr. and DuPont Manual High Schools. He served at Ahrens Trade School as a counselor and assistant principal. He was then promoted to principal at the young age of 32 working in that capacity at Ahrens, Butler and Jeffersontown HS before taking a well-earned retirement in 1995.
He proudly served 28 years in the 100th Division U.S. Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Colonel and receiving commendations for meritorious service and marksmanship. He was also selected to participate in the National Defense Strategy Course, first as a student then moderator in Washington D.C.
His life will be honored Friday, August 3 at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Resthaven, Heady Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Rd. Visitation precedes the service from 10-2.
