Emma Jane Akers of Loveland, Colorado passed away at home on March 1, 2021. She was 89 years young and surrounded by loved ones, including her beloved cat Pansy. Emma was born on October 3, 1931 in Williamson, West Virginia to Rachel Lowe Reed and Earl Reed.
A difficult and abusive childhood molded Emma into a woman ahead of her time. She knew what she wanted and went for it. She met her husband at fifteen and proposed to him. Emma and James Akers wed March 5, 1947. By the time she was twenty-one she had given birth to five children. She worked outside of the home when women usually stayed home, raised their children and took care of the household. Emma worked hard all her life, cleaning other people’s homes while raising her children and keeping her own home spotless. After her children left home, she also adopted and raised her granddaughter, Emmy.
She moved to Colorado in 1990 with plans to retire and spend time with her grandchildren. She was not one to sit still long, so she also took a job at McDonalds. She enjoyed solving puzzles, cross stitching, coloring, teaching her grandkids how to play various card games, and watching her boyfriend Chuck Norris on Walker, Texas Ranger.
Emma was very religious. She prayed daily, trusted in God completely and loved going to church where she also taught in Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Akers, after 42 years of marriage; her father, mother, brother, and daughter, Sheila Lynn Bivens.
She is survived by four children: James Ray Akers (Wilda Gaye), Lois Akers Biederstadt (David), Linda Sisk, and Delores Akers; nine grandchildren: Robin Cordova (Dave), Emma Young, Tracy Symes (Denny), Renae Sisk, Travis Clary, Rachael Peden (Chris), David Clary (Brooke), Bobby Clary(Erin), Dena Pruitt (Thomas); thirteen great-grandchildren: Stephanie Bradford (Bradley), Trevor Cordova, Alaina Cordova, Devany Symes (Cody), Raven Symes, Dalton Symes, Katelyn Bevins, Jacob Blankenship, Andrew Peden, Rylee Peden, Hayden Clary, Marshall Clary, and Gaige Lane; one great-great grandchild, Audrey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
We hold you close within our hearts, and there you shall remain, to walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again. So, rest in peace dear Emma Jane, and thanks for all you’ve done. We pray that God has given you the crown you’ve truly won.
Pastor John Sanders will lead the memorial service to be held on July 28th at 11:00 a.m. at Hunter Chapel, 2100 N. Lincoln Avenue, Loveland. Everyone is welcome.
