I was in marching band under Dr. Gammill at beloved MHS from 73-75 and he led one of the best bands in Texas year after year! Our band had over 200 members and gave a great performance at Jones stadium during a plainsmen playoff game! We also hit a cow with our bus coming back from a game at Hereford. Nothing phased C. Doyle. We held a reunion for him in 1988, which was awesome! We loved that man, he always made band fun. Pic of me and my grandkids!

One of the best most colorful  great hearted people you could ever meet. He will be missed, his infectious smile and bright shining light  also forever will be missed but etched into my mind and very being.

I got exiled in the late 60's, or so I thought at the time, to Coronado  HS from Evans Jr. High because we had moved across Quaker.  We became rabid Mustang band members.  Most of my teenage friends were in the Monterrey band.  It is a high testament that we held Mr. Gammill  as the standard to compete with and top them.  45 years later there are many who say C. Doyle Gammill made a profound difference in the lives of his students.  Each of us strive to make a difference in life. C. Doyle Gammill made a Priceless difference in those he taught.

Mr. Gammill was truly one of the most caring and sincere people I have ever met.  I will never forget how he treated me when I became the band director at Hutchinson JH for the 2002-2003 school year.  He was always there to support myself and the band.   I always loved his handwritten notes and that stick of gum!  

Most of all, I loved him as a person.  He was always great to talk to and tell amazing stories.  Mr. Gammill we will all miss you but know you are looking down and smiling upon all of us.  



He brought a lot of fun to the world and was  a great example of  encouragement. We should all try to emulate  his joy.  Prayers for comfort for Tam and his family.

Babs and I are so sorry to hear about Doyle.  I drove  band charters for Doyle from 73 to 80. He was a joy to be around. I last saw him at Longhorn Steak house 5 weeks ago. The last thing he said to me was "have a happy birthday next week.  It was an honor to have known him and you.

Tam and family:
If you wound me up, I could go on like one of those "one-man band" monkeys that walks around banging a drum and cymbals--telling stories about Doyle until I ran out of steam. Since no one besides me would enjoy that, I will mention just two stories. 
When Doyle was Band Director at MHS, I remember him sitting in his office in the Band Hall, pounding out letters on an old manual typewriter. He was replying to letters that he had received from former students, old friends, etc. He was the original social network. I admired him for that, even if I never followed his lead. People didn't forget Doyle, nor did he forget them.
The other memory I will share might be from the last time I saw Doyle in person. Although I can't remember exactly when it was, I remember him telling me about the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus." At the time, I hadn't seen the movie, but he highly recommended it, and told me I should watch it. It was some time before I did so, but I saw immediately why he liked it.  Doyle had a huge heart for his students, and really gave of himself. 
What both these stories have in common is Doyle's love for those he interacted with. The world is a little bit worse off since Doyle is gone, but the world is a whole lot better off that Doyle was part of it for 78 years. 
I'm sorry that I won't be able to make it to the services, but I will be thinking of him (and of you).

I first met Doyle when I moved to Lubbock in the 7th grade and JT Hutchinson Junior High. We pledged Kappa Sigma together and have been friends for many years. I have many stories about Doyle, and will share one with you to illustrate what a kind and considerate person that he was. He was the choir director for the Kappa Sigs when there was an all school fraternity and sorority competition. After the first choir practice, Doyle came to me in private and asked me if I would be a designated mouth mover. I asked what that would entail, and in his compassionate voice, he said that I would be required to memorize all of the words, get dressed up in a tuxedo , hold my head high, and not permit any notes to pass my lips! This was his kind way to tell me that I was not skilled in singing. He was absolutely correct. I loved the man. Yes, we won first place.

I was a member of the LHS Westerner Band and Doyle was the drum major.  Great memories marching at football games under his direction.  He made my  band experiences exciting and memorable.  My prayers to his family and rest in peace my friend.

Who does not remember Mr. Gammill roaming the halls of MHS!  What a great man!  May God Bless the Gammill family.

There is not a single, solitary good memory that I have from Monterey High School that does not involve this man.  I've never laughed harder with anyone else (other than my dad), never worked harder to make someone proud of me.  I'm convinced that my entire life was shaped by this funny, sweet, crazy man.  I still tell stories about C. Doyle Gammill and still retell stories that originated with him.  I am so grateful that he was such a huge part of my life.  It's amazing to think how many of us would still, to this very day, follow you anywhere!

Rest in peace, my friend.  

Oh my the many happy and funny memories with Mr. Gammill and Tam.  Never met a stranger and always made you feel like you could be or do anything you dreamed.  Thanks for the laughs, the encouragement and the friendship CD!!!  Tam, our prayers are with you and the family!!!  

I will always remember Mr. C. Doyle Gammill.  He was always so hilarious, encouraging, and just a down right good person.  He was a fair man.  He made sure all of his subordinates remained on an equal playing field.  He showed and shared love and compassion for all band directors and their students, no matter what band program you participated in.  Mr. Gammill always created a space for you in his place of authority.  He never met a stranger and he always said, "Ahhh Yeah!"  Mr.  Gammill literally marched to the beat of his own drums.  He had many of them.  He was a bailiff in the courtroom, a volunteer at the hospital, and an Instrumental Music Supervisor.  But yet, I still call him, a Gentle Giant!  Rarely was there a pianissimo (extremely quiet), moment when Mr. Gammill was around!  His presence changed the environment to straight fortissimo (extrememly loud) laughter!  He loved music!  He loved people!  That man absolutely loved his family and friends!  So with that I say, family and friends, press through the pain!  Pray for God's power!  Appeal for His peace!  Make it a priority to be prosperous, as this is what Mr. C. Doyle Gammill stood for!  Rest in God's arms, Mr. Gammill!  You were very special to me and to many others!
I Thank God for allowing our paths to cross.
