Services for Edward William Gaskill, 91, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Brian Wiggins and Bro. Ty Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with full military honors.
Mr. Gaskill was born June 14, 1921 in Sommerset, New York, the son of the late Grace Leoninte (Martin) and Donald Stewart Gaskill. He passed away Monday, November 12, 2012 in a local hospital.
Mr. Gaskill was retired from the AFL-CIO. He traveled all over establishing unions. He was a beekeeper for 15 years. Mr. Gaskill was his own financial broker. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and fished in every Great Lake. From the time that he and his wife married, they traveled all over. They were married in Niagra Falls. Mr. Gaskill became a resident of Pinecrest Retirement Community in 2001 and his family wishes to thank all the staff and nurses for many years of caring for him. They also wish to thank Dr. Karnati and his staff for their compassionate care.
Mr. Gaskill enlisted in the United States Army in New York with duites in Hawaii, Gilbert, Marianas, New Hebrides and Ryukyus Islands. He was responsible for a machine gun squad in the 105th Infantry. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Service, Asiatic-Pacif Service Medal with arrowhead, Good Conduct, and Purple Heart.
Ed planted 26 rose bushes for Miss Cookie so she would have fresh roses every day.
He is survived by his wife, Helen "Cookie" Shearer Gaskill of Lufkin; stepdaughters and their husbands, Sharon Shearer London and Wes of Lufkin, and Gail Shearer Dalrymple and Gerry of Montgomery; step grandchildren, Michael Wesley London and wife Ashley of Diboll, Stephen Douglas London and wife Regina of Jasper, Candace London Metz and husband Chris of Huntsville, Kari Hood French and husband John of Huntsville and Larra Hood and Stephen Smith of San Antonio; step-great grandchildren, Colton and Cyle Metz, Joshua and Jayson London and Jacob and Jeffrey French; brother, Roger Gaskill of Caliente, Nevada; nephew and niece, John Gibson and wife Dian of Lockport, New York; great-nephews, Mike, David and Douglas of Las Vegas, Nevada and Roddy Gaskill of Longview; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Doc Mosley of Houston, Lynn and Jimmy Hatfield of Bowie and Patsy Deweber of Bowie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Joyce Pruett of Cleveland, Vernon and Lottie Pruett of California, and Glynn and Helen Pruett of Ft. Worth; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gaskill was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Gaskill.
Pallbearers will be John French, Steve London, Mike London, John Gibson, Bobby Reynolds, Stephen Smith, Chris Metz, and Colt Metz.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
Mr. Gaskill will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders of the Hemphill Chapter to his final resting place.
