Venice Sakell of Winthrop, former Fulbright Teacher in Greece, died Monday, December 10, 2018 at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Arthur Sakell. Venice was born in Lynn, the only child of George and Mary Poulos, both born in Greece. Her step-mother, Adriana Badas Poulos was also born in Greece.
Her road to a Ph.D. degree began with graduation from Lynn Classical High School in 1939. From Boston University, she received her Bachelor’s Degree with distinction in German literature in 1947. In 1964, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in Comparative Literature, French, German, and English. In 1957, she wrote her dissertation called, “Baudelairein Germany: The Critical Reception.” She continued her post-doctoral studies in the 60’s and 70’s. She was professor emeritus of State University College in Plattsburgh, NY where she taught French language and literature for 21 years. Venice was a Fulbright teacher in Greece where she taught English to high school students.
Venice leaves her niece, Elizabeth Ann Bouras, her cousins Stella Nall, John Michael Nall and his family, and the late Arthur Poulos and his wife, Claudia. Venice also leaves extended family in Greece and her dear friend, Mary Chistoforou and family.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 9:30 to 10:30am followed by a funeral service in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 So. Common St. Lynn on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 11am. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
