

Campbell was born on February 3, 1929, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to William and Rebecca (McCorquodale) Johnstone who emigrated from Scotland in the 1920’s. He graduated from Hillside High School in 1947 where he played varsity basketball. Campbell was a corporal in the Marines and served on the USS Columbus during NATO operations in the Mediterranean. Following his tour of duty, he attended Union College. Mr. Johnstone began his career with Westfield Sheet Metal in Kenilworth in 1950 and spent the next 57 years with the company, eventually retiring as CEO in 2007. He was instrumental in the formation of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #22 in Cranford and the establishment of the Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Norther New Jersey. He was active with the Cranford Little League and Cranford Recreation Basketball League. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, sailor and enjoyed bridge.
Mr. Johnstone was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Laura (1995) and his brother William “Scotty” Johnstone (2019). He is survived by his spouse of 20 years, Barbara; five children: Laura Berry, Nancy May, Janet Russamano, Thomas Johnstone and Joyce Wilber and their spouses; two step-children: Mary Beth Strand and Allison Roberts and their spouses; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A private burial will take place at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth on June 13, with a celebration of life planned for later in the year.
