Robert William Jones

Robert W. Jones, 93, of Manahawkin, NJ and formerly of Brick Township, NJ passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

Mr. Jones was born in Camden, NJ and lived in Rutledge, Delaware Co., until World War II. He attended Swarthmore High School and served in the Navy culminating with the sinking of his ship (USS William D Porter DD 579) by enemy aircraft on June 10, 1945. He was wounded in that attack and accordingly received the Purple Heart medal. Mr. Jones was a charter member of chapter 701 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart located in Point Pleasant, NJ.

He earned his B.S. degree from Penn State University in 1956.

His career in higher education spanned over twenty six years in various administrative posts around the country. He also served this region by his participation on several accreditation committees for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities.

Mr. Jones was personally responsible for the dedication of renaming Chambers Bridge Rd in Brick as well as McKinley Dr. in Manahawkin to the Purple Heart Highway.

Surviving is his endearing and devoted wife, Marge Dragotta. Also surviving is a beloved son, Scott (Whitey) Jones and grandson Robert, all from Manahawkin.

The Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin was entrusted with the arrangements. A Memorial Service will be performed at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. with full military honors.
