OBITUARY

Courtney Oliver Middleton

January 21, 1917January 29, 2020

Courtney Oliver Middleton was born January 21, 1917 departed this life surrounded by his wife and family on January 29, 2020. CO, as he was affectionately called, was born in Jamestown S.C. and came to Asbury Park at the age of 5 and during the time of this nation’s segregation, attending Bangs Avenue School. He was a graduate from Asbury Park High School. CO enlisted in the Navy following high school where he served our nation as a member of the South Pacific PT Squadron 31 from 1941-1946. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he started his own business, Middleton and Sample Car Wash, on Heck Street in Asbury Park. He also was a member of a band named Troubadours of Rhythm where he played the trumpet. He played at serval church functions, weddings, funerals, and dances. He later purchased and ran the ABC Coal Company in Avon NJ from1970-1995, CO had an incredible work ethic. He was also employed at Midland Glass Company in Cliffwood, NJ for 25 years where he was president of the GBBA Local 119. Following his retirement from Midland Glass he reentered the work force working for Eastern Dental Firm in Avenel NJ as a Union representative. He continued employment at this firm for an additional 25 years, retiring in 2010 at the age of 93. In April 16, 1952 C.O. married the love of his life, Evelyn Garrett and from that union were 4 sons. He is predeceased by his parents Oliva Brown Middleton and Henry Middleton, his brother Elwood Middleton; sister, Doristine Middleton Harris and his son Henry Eldrige Middleton. Despite sustaining a cerebral accident that slowed him down, he didn’t let it stop him He had a huge celebration in honor of his 100th birthday in 2017 and continued to spend time with his sons in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and winters in Coral Springs, Florida. He also volunteered in the maintenance of the Mount Prospect Cemetery in Neptune for over 25 years and was a faithful member of St. Stephens Church in Asbury Park, He was extremely fond of visiting his grandchildren and enjoyed there many activates and seeing them grow. He was recently honored by the Neptune Township for his years of services in the Navy for serving in World War II and on the occasion of his 103rd birthday. CO leaves to mourn and cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 67 years, Evelyn Garrett Middleton, sons Marc Middleton, of Lowell Massachusetts, Ben and Michelle Middleton, of Barrington Rhode Island, and Tracy C. Middleton from Coral Springs Florida and 8 adoring grandchildren. Michael B., Garrett P., Gabriela C., Sarah N., Matthew A., Olivia N., Nicholas A. , Isabella J., and a host of brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews and friends. He lived his life by his motto that “Every day is a Holiday” and should be celebrated, which he did to the fullest up until the time of his death. Visiting hours will be from 2-4pm & 7-9pm on Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St. in Manasquan. Funeral services will be Saturday Feb 1, 2020 at 11am at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Prospect Cemetery Heck Ave, Neptune, right in back of Neptune High School.

To my uncle Courtney.. even though I wasn’t there enough to see you and aunt Evelyn I was there In spirit... always remember family is everything and I love all of you deeply... im so glad we got to see you when you were in your last days of living.. that meant alot💜you are a legend 103 years old I can’t believe it!!

Uncle Courtney was my uncle and he was also like a father. He uplifted me And always make me feel loved and special. I will miss him dearly.
