Kathleen Gertrude Schmidt

June 21, 1949July 5, 2020

Kathleen G. Schmidt (Gigi), 71, of Brielle, died Sunday, July 5, 2020 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick surrounded by her husband and sons. Born in Neptune, she spent her childhood growing up in Spring Lake with her six siblings. She attended St. Catherine’s Elementary School and Red Bank Catholic before transferring to Manasquan High School. After two years of nursing school, she settled down with her husband and began a family, continuing to work as a waitress at several local restaurants.

In 1978, Kathy and Larry purchased a property known as Capt. Sam Goods Place on the river in Brielle and converted it into Union Landing Restaurant. She was in charge of the front of the house and was truly the “hostess with the mostess!” Kath was not just an employer, she was a friend and mother figure to much of the young staff that worked at the UL in the early years. The number of people she influenced, befriended, mentored and laughed with over the years (patrons and staff alike) is endless.

As she transitioned out of working full time at the restaurant she focused her time on tennis and the UL Tennis Team. Although she could be a feisty competitor, tennis provided yet another outlet for her socialization. The tennis girls gathered regularly for lunches at the patio after matches and held legendary end of season parties.

Kathy was a huge supporter and volunteer with Big Hearts To Little Hearts, a non-profit focused on raising funds to help with research and treatment of congenital heart disease in children.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years Larry, her two sons Larry Jr. (Patti) and Matthew (Alison), seven grandchildren Larry III, Patrick, Gavin, Tanner, Riley, Lila and Avery, and her siblings, Betsy, Patrick and Patricia. She is predeceased by her siblings Brian, Gilbert and Eileen.

The Schmidt family, in keeping with the current recommendations of the CDC, will celebrate Kathleen’s life at a later date. The Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Big Hearts To Little Hearts at https://bighearts2littlehearts.com/kathy/ or mail to PO Box 597, Spring Lake, NJ 07762.

As one of Kathy’s Manasquan High School classmates, I appreciated her upbeat energy. Kathy was a positive force at MHS (1964-67), one that stays in mind even all these years later. More recently, I think fondly of going to Union Landing, where Kathy gave the gift of her positive presence there. With thoughts and sympathy to all of her family, Jenny

Dear Larry ,Larry jr and Matt. We were so shocked to hear the sad news! I can still hear her laughs. I remember the conversations we had about retiring and talking business stuff. You guys were great. Prayers for your family.

Dear Larry, Larry and Matt,
I am so sorry to hear of Kathy's passing. Through the worst time in my life she gave me strength and encouragement. I will never forget her kindness and her laughter. She loved to laugh and I was always a good source for that. Our group at UL always had the best of times, kayaking trips, parties, trips to Margaretville to name only a few. I will never forget Kathy and her kindness. RIP Kathy
As always, Diane Dwyer

Kathy was my moms best friend. I remember the early Catskill days 40+ yes ago with your family. Kathy shared my love for gardening and had an artist's eye. She gave my mom so much joy over the years and was a true friend for which I'm so thankful.
Shes up with my dad Al, looking over all of us. Wishing you peace.
