OBITUARY

Mrs. Theresa Long Siebert

November 23, 1926October 14, 2020

I am sad to announce the passing of my mother, Theresa L Siebert, M.D., on October 14, 2020. Terry was 93 years old. Mom had an adventurous, inquiring intellect, and lived a full, productive life. She graduated from Hunter College in 1948 and went on to obtain her medical degree in 1951 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P& S). She was one of only four women in her class at Columbia. It was there she met our father, David Siebert, MD. My mother was a radiologist, my father, a surgeon. They married in 1952 and became Terry & Dave. David was assigned to military duty in Germany as Captain in the US Air Force. They were stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, when Theresa gave birth to Laurel in 1954. Rather than live on Hahn Air Force Base, my parents chose to immerse themselves in the language and culture of their host country. They rented a room in the Hotel Zurr Post in Bernkastel -Kues for two years. While in Germany, they bought a German Shepard, Baron. Terry loved Baron, and I have wonderful photos of her training him in Germany with Herr Lucas at Metzenhause. Terry, Dave, Laurel and their 1 ½ year old German Shepard, Baron, all travelled back to the US on the Rose, a US Military Transport Ship arriving in New York, NY on June 30, 1954. Terry gave birth to David Jr in the Women’s Hospital in NY, NY on June 18, 1957. In 1958, they bought their first home in Manasquan, NJ, and lived there over 50 years. For 15 years, Terry took the bus from Parkway Pines, NJ, to New York City, where she worked as a radiologist at St. Luke’s Hospital. In 1969, she obtained a post at Point Pleasant Hospital, Point Pleasant, NJ. Ten years later, she was named Chief of Radiology. Our parents were excited to volunteer as members of the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee (LPOOC) Medical Staff for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Captured by the area’s natural beauty, they purchased a condominium on Lake Placid. Our parents loved to travel, and treated my sister and me to several cruises, and an especially memorable trip through Europe in a VW camper they purchased from the VW factory in 1972. The photo above is one of my favorites. It captures her true happiness of the moment on one of her radiology continuing education courses in the British Virgin Islands. After they retired, they became snowbirds, and wintered in Florida in various resorts, including Fisher Island, Amelia Island, Sarasota, and Naples. In her later years, Terry and a wonderful caregiver, Mary Ellen Berryman, took care of my Dad, who suffered from Alzheimer’s. After he died in 2008, Mother rarely spoke. Mary Ellen and Mother moved full -time to Hallandale Beach, Florida some four years ago. May Ellen was our mother’s angel and best friend. She was at her side as Terry passed away. Since my Dad passed away in June 2008, I have thought about him two or three times every day, and I will now think of Terry & Dave together until my last breath. Rest in peace, Mom and Dad. Mom is survived by Mary Ellen, son David Jr and daughter, Laurel Michaels, as well as brothers John and Michael Long, sister Virginia, and granddaughters, Heidi and Rachel. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10am at St. Catharine Cemetery in Sea Girt.
