
Glen "Joe" Eldon Goodwin, 83, died April 6, 2008 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving family on his 83rd birthday softly listening to the song, "Sweet Hour of Prayer". Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as Seaman First class on the U.S.S. Nashville honored with the following commendations: Asiatic Pacific Medal with eight stars; Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars; and the WWII Victory Medal. During this time, he first learned his trade as a carpenter, which he later put to use at General Motors in Ontario for 35½ years.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Loretta Gwinn Goodwin; cherished children, John Debbie Goodwin, Nancy Lloyd Fulton, Kevin Tracy Parsons, Leisa Patrick Ewald and Ron Sandy Gibson; twenty grandchildren, Chuck, Sheri, Chad, Greg, John, Tim, Mike, Dustin, Monica, Skip, Tiffani, Kelsi, Kayci, Lanaya, Patrick Jr., Michelle, James, Lauren, Stephanie and Stacie; and twelve great-grandchildren. Joe also leaves behind a brother, Gayle Norma Goodwin; his wonderful cousin, Nita McCraken. Preceding him in death were his parents, Preston and Grace Efaw Goodwin, son-in-law, Wayne Gray; and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Goodwin.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home conducted by Pastor Curtis Evans. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery with military rites by Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail.
