Kathryn (Kitty) Paris Vaden Sparrow, 103, of Martinsville passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2019. She was born January 21, 1916 in Gretna, Va., to the late State Senator Robert Carrington Vaden and Kate Paris Vaden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles Kavanaugh Sparrow; brothers, Robert Carrington Vaden, Jr. and Charles Craddock Vaden; sisters, Margaret Vaden Bouldin and Dolly Vaden Terry.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Kathryn Sparrow McCauley and her husband John Thomas McCauley, Jr. of Charlottesville, Va.; one son Charles Kavanaugh Sparrow, Jr., MD and his wife Gabrielle Boutemy of Richmond, Va.; granddaughers, Kathryn McCauley Garing and her husband Matthew Garing and Elizabeth McCauley Powers and her husband Michael Powers; step granddaughter, Genieve Boutemy; great grandsons, Alexander John Garing and Luke Wyatt Powers; great granddaughters, Emma Kathryn Garing and Abigail Carrington Powers.
Mrs. Sparrow was a graduate of William and Mary College where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. After graduation in 1937 she taught school in Campbell County, Henry County, and Martinsville.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Martinsville, where she was a member of the WMU. She worked in youth organizations and Sunday School. She was active on the Church Flower Committee for years.
Mrs. Sparrow was a charter member and past president of the Garden Study Club of the Garden Club of Virginia and a member and past Regent of the Patrick Henry Chapter DAR. She belonged to the Southern Committee of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin. She was a sustaining member of the Charity League and belonged to the Book Review Club.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Martinsville and will be officiated by Reverend Libby Grammer and Reverend Dr. Dennis Knight. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
